Do Revenge: A Pop Cultural Homage For 90’s & 00’s Fashion By Valeria Gonzalez

This is everything you need to know about Do Revenge, the new Netflix hit movie everyone is talking about. This film has a breathtaking cast starring Camila Mendes from Riverdale and Maya Hawke from Stranger Things. The cast also includes stars like Austin Abrams, Sophie Turner, and 90’s icon Sarah Michelle. Do Revenge follows the story of Drea (Camila Mendes), the popular girl at her school, as she seeks revenge against her boyfriend (Austin Abrams), who published her sex tape. Drea teams up with Eleanor (Maya Hawke), who is tormented by a rumor created about her; the two of them form an alliance, making Eleanor a new insider into Drea’s ex’s life.

The main reason this movie has become such a fashionable moment among its millennial and Gen Z audience is because it pays tribute to some iconic 90’s and 00’s films. Do Revenge gives its audience a nostalgic taste of wardrobe from Clueless, Mean Girls, The Heathers, and The Princess Diaries

The star of Do Revenge, Camila Mendes, expressed during an interview that while being cast for the role, the director mentioned that Drea’s fashion would be essential for her character development and identity. Drea (Camila Mendes) wore breathtaking, trendy outfits for the upcoming Fall season, as well as a mix of classics inspired by Clueless with its iconic yellow coats. But to add more “2022 vibes,” the film puts a spin on these familiar looks by adding a feather coat and skirt set. Also, we saw elements such as white loafers, berets, and pastel colors.

The film showcased different vibes and fashion eras throughout the movie, and one major element we were sure to identify was the comeback of the ’70s fashion, with its bright colors and bold patterns. Each character had a unique style separating one from the other, reflecting their personality. A perfect example was Maya’s character, Eleanor, who (at the beginning of the film) had brown hair and wore oversized t-shirts, pattern shorts, and baseball caps. Later, after teaming up with Drea, Eleanor went through her “Princess Diaries transformation” in which Drea dyes her hair blonde. Paired with colorful mesh tops, statement earrings and styled her school uniform like any other, giving Eleanor major Heather meets Mia Thermopolis vibes.

Apart from the memorable fashion style in this film, the editing and the recreation of 00’s scenes, such as the iconic Regina George scene after exposing everyone’s secret, definitely hit the audience right in the “nostalgia feels”. Still, as this is 2022, no copies flying around the school hallways were necessary; a single post did its work, and we saw how Drea embodied all the Mean girls’ Regina George vibes.

Do Revenge is a fun, entertaining, full-of-teenage drama film, making the comeback of our beloved 90s and 00s rom-com genre, perfect for those girls’ nights in. This film gave a nostalgic feeling with a new twist as it has a diverse cast, couples, and outfits on screen. And the film has legends such as Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle playing the school director, and Sophie Turner giving a fun-show stealing performance. Most certainly, Do Revenge was one of the most memorable premieres for the month of September bringing a breath of fresh air into the entertainment and fashion industry.
